The purpose of using reverse transcriptase is to generate a complementary DNA (cDNA). Reverse transcriptase is an enzyme that catalyzes a process called reverse transcription where an RNA is converted to a complementary DNA (cDNA). This process is used during the RT-PCR which is commonly used to quantify the amount of messenger RNA (mRNA) transcribed from a gene, and since RNA is fragile and difficult to study a cDNA is synthesized from the RNA using this enzyme during the procedure.
