    i'd say sunlight.

    Explanation:

    there would have to be a specifically placed water source for it to be blocked off by a volcano, so not water. a volcanic eruption cant rid the earth of carbon dioxide, its not scientifically possible. and minerals can be gained from prey, plants, and water sources. whereas volcanic ash can block out sunlight.
