    The basic sequence of a nucleic acid makes it possible to determine, applied to the gene, the amino acid sequence of the polypeptide concerned. It is by hydrogen bonds between the pair of nitrogenous bases that two strands of the DNA or RNA helix are linked.

    They are called bases because they can be protonated at the nitrogen atoms and react weakly in aqueous solution. In nucleic acids, they are generally N-glycosidically linked to ribose or deoxyribose. Structurally active base pairs in the double-stranded DNA may be formed via hydrogen bonds between nucleic bases. The nucleobase sequence in an RNA or DNA strand is also called a base sequence.
