Researchers recently discovered an exquisite fossil of a fern (land plant) in sweden. the plant was preserved instantaneously when buried in a lava flow. under a microscope, scientists can see nuclei, some in different stages of cell division, along with some individual chromosomes. this fossil fern was found in a layer along with dinosaur fossils. how old could this fossil be, based upon this information and dates of events in the history of life

    This fossil must be younger than 475 million years old, because that is when land plants arose
