A client is receiving an antihypertensive drug intravenously for control of severe hypertension. the client's blood pressure is 160/94 mm hg before the infusion. fifteen minutes after the infusion is started, the blood pressure increases to 180/100 mm hg. which type of response is the client demonstrating?

    The answer to this question would be: paradoxical response.

    In this case, the patient is given an antihypertensive drug that should be lowering his blood pressure. But the post-treatment blood pressure was increased, not decreased. That is why the response called paradoxical.

    In this case, the fluid in the infusion might induce fluid overload, so it is better to stop the drug and then examine the patient heart and kidney function.
