    To synthesize ATP.

    Explanation:

Mitochondria are known as Powerhouse of the cell as it produces the power molecule of the cell that is ATP.

In mitochondria, the process of cellular respiration takes place which produces the ATP molecule. The last phase of the respiration called electron transport chain produces more ATP as compared to other phases of the respiration.

During electron transport, the electron flows from one molecule to another losing its energy on the way and leading to the movement of the protons from matrix to intermembrane space. This creates a proton gradient across the membrane and to maintain the equilibrium when the proton move through ATP synthase produces ATP.

Thus, To synthesize ATP is the correct answer.
