    The answer is when the firing pin strikes the primer. The firing pin is held rear underneath the spring tension. When the trigger is drawn, the firing pin moves frontward, crushing and igniting the primer in the cartridge base. The primer ignites the gunpowder, generating gas pressure, which forces the bullet forward and out of the barrel.
