An atom's central region which is made up of protons and neutrons

The central cluster of protons and neutrons in an atom is called the atom's nucleus. Because the only other part of an atom to be concerned about is the electron (which has a very small mass compared to protons and neutrons), the nucleus is also comparatively dense, and holds most of the atom's mass.
