What does the state symbol aq mean when written after a chemical compound in a chemical equation?

    'aq' represents 'aqueous', meaning 'dissolved in water'.

    Be careful, being dissolved in water is different than 'l', or liquid. Liquid means a substance is in liquid phase, not dissolved in water.
