What part of an atom freely moves from one atom to another in a good conductor?

    In short, the electrons move very slowly through the conductor opposite to the direction of current flow (edit: originally I incorrectly stated electrons follow the same direction as the current). The electrons collide with the surrounding delocalised sea and (in a metal) the lattice structure of the said material.
