Exactly why is energy released when a bond is formed? Is this applicable to both ionic AND covalent bonds?

    Energy is released when bonds are formed since atoms form bonds in order to be more stable and thus requiring less energy. The excess energy is released to the environment. This happens in all types of bonds including ionic and covalent.
