What is active listening? Why is it used by parents?

Active listening is a technique used in counselling where the listener paraphrases what they hear using their own words. This is used to assure the speaker that they (the listener) are listening, to confirm what message the speaker is trying to relay, and to confirm understanding between the two parties. This is used by parents in order to have an effective communication with their children.
