In The Time Traveler’s Guide to Elizabethan England, Mortimer imitates a writing style readers might be familiar with from perusing modern travel guides. In other words, a simulated “time travel” experience is achieved. Through this engaging style, Mortimer is able to relate interesting details about daily life in Elizabethan England without sounding pedantic or boring. Sections are organized under small, digestible headings rather than following more traditional historical organization. Mortimer brings historical non-fiction closer to readers that might not otherwise read such accounts, which is a major success made possible in part by the effectiveness of the 'travel guide' style.
