    African American musicians are often considered the founders of Jazz. It soon grew and included the American middle class. Jazz is characterised by the combining or meshing of African American traditional music and white middles class society's traditions. New York and Chicago were important cities in the growth of the Jazz culture. Many jazz musicians, especially black musicians, played in jazz clubs.
