What are historical connections in to kill a mockingbird

Don't know how specific you want this, but TKAM was set in the 1930's in the Southern state of Alabama, where discrimination against African-Americans was still very common. In the story, Tom Robinson is an African-American male wrongly convicted, emphasizing the racism black people were going through in America at this time.
