Based on descriptive details in the passage, you can learn different things depending on what the author tells you. If the author mentions a sword, and the smell of the ocean you could might be able to come to the conclusion that it takes place in a city near the ocean, either in a fantasy novel or some time in the past. Or if the writer says that the character has flower on their apron, and the smell of bread baking you could come to the conclusion that the character is in a bakery.
