The sentence "A phone rang in the concert hall the orchestra stopped playing" is an example of a run-on sentence. In the sentence we have two sepparate independent clauses "a phone rang in the concert hall" and "the orchestra stopped playing", which are not properly joined. To correct a run-on sentence you have to join the two independent clauses using a period, a semicolon or with a conjunction.

For example:

A phone rang in the concert hall. The orchestra stopped playing.

or

A phone rang in the concert hall and the orchestra stopped playing.
