    Many of the Founders were fearful of direct democracy and the power of the common man. As a result, they limited the power of the commoner through the structure of the Constitution.

    The US is a representative democracy meaning people elect other people to vote on their behalf. The Congress members were originally selected by direct vote for the House of Representatives and a vote by state legislatures for the Senate members. The president is voted into office through the Electoral College, a group of representatives chosen to vote on the presidential candidates. For the people to remove an elected official, there is a process in place to create structure and rules in hopes to prevent a mob.
