    The Manhattan project was a top-secret government Research and Development initiative which the the basic aim of developing the atomic bomb.

    From early on in World War II, most countries understood the potential of nuclear weapons. The British were working on their own secretive projected called tube alloys.

    Eventually, the Manhattan project was a join effort with scientists from the UK, US, Canada, Australia, South Africa and many other countries taking part it in it.

    The first bomb was tested in 1945 and in the same year, two bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After this, the Japanese surrendered.
