Mandarin Chinese is not spoken widely outside of China, yet it is spoken by more people than any other language. What makes this possible?

    It is the sheer size and population density of China that makes this possible, along with the fact that "not spoken widely" is relative, and it is still spoken to a great extent in other regions.
