During the first half of the 19th century, what things caused the most problems between the states when it came to slavery?

    The president at the time was Abraham Lincoln, he wanted to banish slavery. The southern states wanted to keep slavery while the north agreed with the president, which then lead the south to secede from the union to create their own state called the confederacy.
