Union fought confederates for New Orleans

    Explanation:

Important because it demonstrated the power of the Union navy. New Orleans also had a large port which the confederates were in charge of, but when union took it over, it made it easier to take control of the Mississippi river, which was alos in the three part plan to defeat the confederates. I believe this was called the Anaconda Plan.
