The fourteenth amendment gave citizenship to all those born in America. Now, former slaves and other races could be citizens in America if they were born there, and everyone was a step closer to being equally treated.

Answer. n. An established course for judicial proceedings or other governmental activities designed to safeguard the legal rights of the individual. The first amendment gives US citizens the rights of free speech, peaceful assembly, etc. They're also called our "Basic Civil Liberties," which give us rights as US citizens. The 14th amendment gave rights to people of slave descent, or people who were former slaves, the rights stated in the 1st amendment.
