    IF safe to be said that The economy was built on sugar and tobacco.

    Tobacco was a popular cash crop grown in the southern colonial states (ie Virginia). In order to obtain this, many people started to develop relation with native tribes that used this product regularly.

    Tea also a very common commodity for british people because they consume tea in a large amount. This make them develop a good trading relationship with the countries in asia.
