Most people in the Middle Ages were peasants, so they didn't travel much and only communicated with the people in their villages. The ones able to communicate with people from different areas were merchants, who travelled constantly selling their goods. But they had to travel large distances with no better means of transport than caravans or ships, making it much more difficult than nowadays.
