The main imperial powers in the late 19th century were Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Portugal and Spain

The main motives for growing their empires was nationalism and national prestige, to find cheap raw materials and market for finished products, and to spread Christianity and civilization. some of the benefits of imperialism was modernization of areas that were colonized, and spread of the gospel. The main drawbacks were economic exploitation of the people, cultural genocide and death of millions during uprisings in the empires. imperialism as a lesson of the past has a negative legacy, in as much as as the subjugated are concerned. There could have been better ways of achieving the positive goals without the colonization. Imperialism also sow the seeds of discord that is evidence in ethnic conflicts in several former colonies.
