The term lords proprietors refer to a certain group of persons granted with a royal charter which allow them the establishment and government of an English colony in the 17th century. Before the American Revolution such British America colonies consisted of thirteen colonies; the New England colonies (Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island), the Middle Colonies (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware) and the South Colonies (Virginia, Maryland, Georgia and South and North Carolina).

Each of these colonies had contrasting governments which resulting in different political, social, economic, and spiritual development. For instance, in the Province of Carolina, one of the southern colonies, had an economy based on large plantations while the economy of the New England and Middle colonies consisted mostly of merchants.

Regarding society, South Carolina exhibited a biracial social-stratified society, based on English tradition. In contrast, Middle Colonies' society was a heterogeneous and diverse with many cultures, language, and religions.

Finally, with respect to religion, in South Carolina, it played a minor role in politics and economy while in New England colonies it dictated political and social lives of the colonists.
