Assuming you are talking about the civil war ... the norths plan was called the anaconda plan because they were going to wrap around the south and strangle it ... like a snake! They were going to cut the confederacy in half ... capture the capital (Richmond) and blockade all imports and exports of the south.
The souths plan was pure defensive strategy ... which obviously failed.
