"Saint Domingue" was known as the "Pearl of the Antilles", it was one of the richest colonies from the French Empire. The economy was dependent on labor too. Slaves remained strong against their "French rulers". Many of them found freedom by escaping to the mountains, forming communities and raiding plantations. Besides the slaves there were also ruthless plantation owners.
