What prompted the early-20th century coup in Brazil? The urban middle class sought to overturn the coffee elite-controlled government. The tenantes sought to concentrate power at the top of the social ladder. The coffee elite felt that their favored social and economic position was threatened. The newly created trade unions established a minimum wage and child labor laws.
