Why did Dred Scott sue his master for his freedom?

1. He had escaped to a free state and wanted to secure his freedom.

2. He was taken to the free state of Illinois and lived there for many years.

3. He was hoping to have slavery abolished in the South.

    "2. He was taken to the free state of Illinois and lived there for many years" is the proper answer. The court decided, however, that because African Americans were not citizens, he had no standing in court.
