Why is it significant that this document begins with a declaration by the "Thirteen United States" and not by the thirteen colonies?

    Jefferson chose to begin this way on purpose, by calling it the Thirteen United States it showed that all the people who belonged to this new nation were in agreement of what they wanted and they all believed in the same thing. It showed they were one and and they were a whole.
