Every year Martha Washington made the arduous journey to his camp, She stayed with him for months at a time. In fact, during the period from April 1775 until December 1783 Martha was able to be with her husband for almost half the time he was away.

    Wheatley became the first African American and first U. S. slave to publish a book of poems, as well as the third American woman to do so. A strong supporter of America's fight for independence, Wheatley penned several poems in honor of the Continental Army's commander, George Washington.
