Why did the members of the Third Estate create an independent assembly?

    They knew that the other two estates would block reforms that would benefit ordinary people

    Since 1614, the Estates-general had not assembled and they had a long list of the grievances. They wanted many social and political reforms. Most representatives belong to the third estate and they, therefore, declared themselves as the national assembly.
