    Roy P. Benavidez, a late Green Beret sergeant he earned the Medal of Honor from President Ronald Reagan for bravery while injured in the Vietnam War.

    Sergeant Benavidez was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1968, but the following recommendation from his commanding officer that he receive the Medal of Honor, the military's highest award for valor, could not be approved until a witness confirmed his deeds. President Reagan presented the Medal of Honor to Mr. Benavidez at the Pentagon on Feb. 24, 1981.
