In 1948, the Soviet Union's dictator Joseph Stalin ordered the blockade of West Berlin - made up by the three Western occupàtion zones -, angry because of the decision to allow a new German currency. The United States and Britain started an airlift to supply the city and avoid shortages or famine. It lasted a year and made the Soviet plan to put pressure on the West fail.
