    Chesapeake Region.

The colonies and eventually states of Virginia and Maryland are known as the Chesapeake Region for their location surrounding Chesapeake Bay.

Virginia and Maryland developed in a similar way because of the geography being similar in the two areas. The swampy conditions made them both suitable for tobacco growth and the coastal areas provided areas for cities to grow. The cities became important port cities for trade.
