The twelve tables were the beginning of a new approach to laws. They were the first legal code of the Roman Republic. They would be passed by the government and written down so that all citizens might be treated equally before them. These laws established rights and responsibilities of Roman citizens in areas of property, trials, personal wrongs, public, and religious matters.
