How did farming continue to be profitable for landowners even after the end of slavery?

By giving workers land, seed, necessary materials, and possibly even housing, the workers would have been able to cultivate the land and work it. However, in return for the supplies and land, the workers had to give the landowners majority, if not all, of the crops that were grown. The landowner would then sell the inventory, and give only a small percentage of the earnings to the workers. It was just enough for the workers to get things like clothes and food, but they still remained at a poor enough state to where they were forced to continue working for the landowners, simply so they would have a place to stay, and something worth while to do. Now, as the landowners got most of the profit from the sales, they did very well off. Thus, they continued using this method to their advantage.
