A major barrier to representative democracy is the unwillingness of citizens to familiarize themselves with the most important issues confronting the country is a true statement.

    Explanation:

Citizen participation is a key factor which decides the success of representative democracy. This factor influences the democracy right from voting by citizens to elect their representatives.

Apart from voting, citizens fail to take part or familiarize with issues concerning the nation or the government. The elected representatives are politically accountable if found to be inefficient or faulty, the citizens have the power to oust them out in a representative democracy.

Only if the citizens participate or at least be familiar with what is going on in the country, they will come to know where is the problem and can find ways to work with the government. Citizen participation is the best way to make the representative democracy work in the best way.
