The principle purpose of its construction was to create a rail that linked Chattanooga to the seaports on the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, the railroad aquired by either lease or purchase many other railroads over the years, with the main focus of compete againt the rail lines in South Carolina. Nowadays it exists only as a paper railroad.
