    Use Pythagorean Theorem to find the answer ... a^2 + b^2 = c^2.

    since we have b and c, we would use the formula of c^2 - b^2 = a^2

    2.9^2 - 2.1^2 = 4 (if we get the square root of each side, we get the answer of a = 2

    If they are connecting sides

    then c^2-b^2=a^2 by Pythagorean theorm

    (2.9) ^2 - (2.1) ^2=a^2
