David's family is driving from New York to Florida. They know the distance they will travel is about 1100 miles. If a map has a scale of 1 in. = 80 mi, about how far will the trip be on the map?

    You can do the proportion

    1 inch / 80 miles = x inch / 1100 miles

    1100=80x

    11oo divided by 80 equals 13.75

    The trip would be about 13.75 inches on the map
