To determine the new amount you need to find out what 2/3 of 4 1/2 is equal to. What you see "of" in an algebraic expression or equation, replace it with (*).

    2/3 of 4 1/2 =

    2/3 * 4 1/2 =

Convert 4 1/2 to an improper fraction.

    2/3 * 9/2 =

    Now multiply and reduce

    18/6 = 3

The new amount of dog food is 3 cups.
