What are the key rules when adding and subtracting fractions

    When adding and subtracting fractions, they must have a common denominator. The number on the bottom must be the same in each fraction. For example, you can subtract 2/4-1/4 because the denominator is the same, but you cannot subtract 2/3-1/8 because the denominator is different.
