    To use the substitution method, we write one equation where one variable is isolated to one side. Then, we substitute this equation to the other given equation and solve. We do as follows:

    y=5-3x

    5x-4y=-3

    5x-4 (5-3x) = - 3

    5x - 20 + 12x = - 3

    17x = 1

    x = 17

    y = 2
