3x - 1/2 (8x - 2) = 4

Step 1: 3x - 4x + 1 = 4

Step 2: x + 1 = 4

Step 3: 3x + 1 - 1 = 4 - 1

Step 4: x=3

    Step 2: the "x" should be a "-x"

    Step 2 I think because you would take 3-4 and not just put x
