A rectangular area is to be fenced in along a straight river bank as illustrated. The length of the fenced-in area is to be 5 feet greater than the width, and the total amount of fencing to be used is 89 feet. Find the width and length of the fenced-in area.

    The length of the fenced in area will occupy the perimeter of the of the land which is 89 feet, so therefore.

    Since perimeter of a rectangle is

    2L + 2W

    2L + 2W = 89 ... eqn 1

    and Since L is 5 ft greater than W

    L = W+5 ... eqn 2

    Substituting eqn 2 to eqn 1

    2 (W+5) + 2W = 89

    2W + 10 + 2W = 89

    4W+10 = 89

    4W = 89-10 = 79

    W = 79/4

    W = 17.75

    From eqn 2. L = W + 5

    L = 17.75 + 5

    L = 24.75.
