    5+3 (q-4) = 2 (q+1)

    mutiply the first bracket by 3

    (3) (q) = 3q

    (3) (-4) = -12

    mutiply the second bracket by 2

    (2) (q) = 2q

    (2) (1) = 2

    5+3q-12 = 2q+2

    5-12+3q = 2q+2

    -7+3q = 2q+2

    move 2q to the other side

    sign changes from + 2q to - 2q

    -7+3q-2q = 2q-2q+2

    -7+3q-2q = 2

    -7+q = 2

    move - 7 to the other side

    sign changes from - 7 to + 7

    -7+7+q = 2+7

    q = 2+7

    Answer: q = 9
