    2 VD + 3 DVD = $85.00 - - eqn1

    1 VD + 2 DVD = $49.50 - - eqn2

    question: 1 VD + 1 DVD = ?

make VD the same in both eqn, 2 VD:

    from eqn2, 1 VD + 2 DVD = $49.50

    eqn2 x 2 : 2 VD + 4 DVD = $99.00 - - eqn3

    eqn3 - eqn1 = price of 1 DVD

    $99.00 - $85.00 = $5.00

    in conclusion, 1 DVD = $5.00

    substitute 1 DVD = $5.00 into eq2,

    1 VD + 2 DVD = $49.50

    1 VD + 2 ($5.00) = $49.50

    1 VD = $39.50

    therefore,

    1 VD + 1 DVD = $ 39.50 + $5.00 = $44.50
